The fact that Dear White People has no Asian main characters is very ironic.
I like Dear White People. The film was great, and I’ve only just started to watch the TV show, which is also pretty good. As someone who has never had to face the issues that Dear White People discusses, I find it both educational and entertaining.
That said, why is there no asian main characters? I know that the show is discussing what it is like to be a minority in the 21st century at large, but surely having at least one person from asian heritage within the main characters would have been necessary to fully embody a diverse cast.
With the recent whitewashing of asian characters in Hollywood, now seems like the perfect time for Dear White People to address these issues. It’s a problem already covered in Master of None; which I highly recommend anyone and everyone watches.
So, why keep the cast to just black and white?
Just to clarify, there is one very minor asian character, but don’t let this fool. They certainly don’t get their fair share of screen time.
