What is the biggest innovation in gameplay on PS4 so far?
In terms of gameplay, there hasn’t been many new ideas introduced to console gaming in the last few years. Sure, you could point to VR as the next big change, but it’s difficult to judge new technology so early into its release.
For me, it’s been the introduction of the seamless open world experience, which I first saw in Batman: Arkham Knight.
Being able to travel through a game’s world with no load-screens makes a surprising difference. It allows the player to explore the world uninterrupted, immersing them further into the idea that they are venturing in a living, breathing city. For me, it broke any barriers between me and the game, allowing me to fully embody the protagonist.
I didn’t really notice the difference in quality until I played Fallout 4, which suffers from a lot of loading screens within its world when entering inside buildings. This stopped me from feeling truly part of its world in the same way I did with Arkham Knight.
I had seen open worlds with no load screens (such as Shadow of Mordor), but nothing that allowed me to go inside detailed buildings and explore like I would in real life.
