Recently I’ve been seeing a lot of promotion for mental health campaigns. This is usually by attractive popular people who get lots of likes on Facebook or Instagram. They tell us to talk to friends or family about our issues, and that a problem shared is a problem solved. The thing is, it’s all complete bullshit.
I understand that these campaigns are great at raising awareness, but generally speaking they are highly insensitive without intending to be. These issues are not black and white; and reducing them to be so simple implies those suffering are too thick to figure out the easy solution.
People don’t necessarily have anyone they feel comfortable talking to, or maybe they don’t want to say their thoughts aloud. I myself have experienced thoughts so politically incorrect I wouldn’t dare utter them to anyone I respect, meaning I simply have to suppress them until the thought passes. Even though these were my own thoughts, they are so out of character and disturbing I would never want to share them.
How can someone share their thoughts if they don’t understand them fully?
