My XXL Freshman Predictions
1) Jaden Smith
Outside of his family’s fame, Jaden is a talented artist in his own right. His confidence (potentially arrogance) is reflected throughout his music, which takes large amounts of inspiration from Kid Cudi and Kanye West. Following the success of his album, Syre, Jaden deserves industry respect.
2) Lil Pump
Little Pump isn’t a talented lyricist, but he’s arguably the most fun rapper to breakthrough this year. I think he has the makings of a young Lil Wayne; great music for partying and a unique enough voice that he can easily be featured on other artist’s songs.
3) Rich Brian
Rich Brian is an all round superstar. Experimental music and an extraordinarily humble personality; Rich Brian has the makings of an artist who could stay relevant for decades.
I’d describe Valee’s music as chill trap. Whilst I enjoy his music, his recent signing to Kanye West and Pusha T’s G.O.O.D Music label is the main reason why Valee’s career is worth watching. Combining G.O.O.D Music’s producers and Valee’s unique voice could result in some excellent music.
Cozz and J.I.D are both excellent examples of why Dreamville is one of the best label’s currently in hip hop. Cozz’s music is very reminiscent of 90’s hip hop, and J.I.D’s music takes very clear inspiration from J. Cole; both are great. Dreamville as a whole is worth watching, as the label is continuously signing excellent artists.
Now onto the reject section.
I think these will probably make the list, but I don’t necessarily think the quality of their music has the longevity to see them stay relevant in the music industry for more than a few years.
They are “fast food” rappers, easy to consume but more than two albums and you’ll want to be sick.
6ix9ine dresses like a clown, and there’s a very good reason for that. His music is loud, unapologetic and purposely controversial because of its low quality. It’s a very short career plan, but one that is currently working very well for him.
8) Bhad Bhabi
How far can a meme take your career? Luckily she’s got some very talented producers supporting her, so her career’s future is unpredictable.
9) Lil Xan
The guy who said Tupac has no clout (despite being deceased for over 20 years and still having vastly more followers than Lil Xan). He has a cult following, but I think his music is pretentious and I hate his face.
XXXTentacion but with more trap. Enough said.
